As Many As 713 Sindhi Novels Have Been Published Till 2019: Mumtaz Bukhari



Famous Sindhi journalist and writer Mumtaz Bukhari has said it took three years to complete his study on Sindhi novels and finally it had got published in 2020 by Sindhica publishers.

 He said that he visited different libraries including Sindh Archives and Institute of Sindhology, to collect reference material and hoped that the book would open new dimensions as far as research on Sindhi novels is concerned.

Mr. Bukhari claimed that he has included Sindhi novels published before and after partition, while Sindhi novels being published in Sindh, India, England, America and Singapore were also included in different chapters of the book.

He also claimed that he studied more than 100 Sindhi novels published outside Sindh, while he has mentioned almost every Sindhi novel published in Sindh, in his study.

“I was moved to conduct study on Sindhi novel because all the studies conducted prior to this one seemed to be copy and paste, while there were many discrepancies and inaccuracies in prior studies regarding Sindhi novel. I have carried forward my study on topics discussed in Sindhi novels, technique of novel and literary theories adopted in Sindhi novel.

For the first time children novel and novels written by female novelists have been discussed extensively in this study,” Mumtaz added.

Mr. Bukhari further claimed that according to his research only three Sindhi novels were published in 19th century, in 20th century up to December 1946, 87 Sindh novels were published, during the year of partition (1947), 11 Sindhi novels were published, while up to partition he found mentions of 30 novels but those were not verified, while after partition to 2000, 193 Sindhi novels were published in Sindh, and mentions of 12 novels were found that could not be verified.

Revealing more about Sindhi novel, Mr. Bukhari claimed that in 21st century up to 2019, 141 novels were published in Sindh, and up to 2000 AD, some 250 Sindhi novels were published in India and other parts of the world, there were 19 mentions of novels that couldn’t be verified. Till 2019, 28 Sindhi novels were published in India, England and other parts of the world. In total 713 Sindhi novels have been published till 2019.

Mumtaz Bukhari is a Sukkur based senior Sindhi journalist and writer; he has penned down three novels and also translated some novels in Sindhi language.
