Sindhu Nawaz And YAC Demand Revival Of Student Unions In Pakistan

Rights activist and feminist Sindhu Nawaz Ghanghro from platform of Youth Action Committee (YAC) has demanded for the revival of student unions in all educational institutions and to abolish 144 Act. She was addressing a presser in Hyderabad on Monday.

Ms. Sindhu said that the labor and student unions in all multinational and national organizations were accepted in cultured world, from these unions national leaders were born and one great example of that was Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, she become president of student union during her studies, but it was unfortunate that she became prime minister of this country and was unable to revive student unions.

"In the absence of these unions poor students face endless problems, such as huge fee structure in institutes, on the other hand the present government has not only ended all the scholarships for poor and needy students but has also banned construction of new infrastructure in universities, many such issues take place that are not solved due to absence of student unions.

Due to this students and our society is facing many problems; such as poor students are unable to get higher education due to lack of resources, students are isolated and it effects their education, with the interference of government religious extremism in educational institutions is increasing. In this regards YAC has announced a march in Hyderabad on 21st September 2019, students of all parts of the country are invited to participate in this march of revival of student unions." Ms. Nawaz added.

                      Ban on Student Unions:

It was 1983 when last student union elections were held in universities and colleges across Pakistan and on the eve of 1984 student union elections, the ruling junta of contemporary times banned them.
Zia-ul-Haq collected the reports that anti-government student unions will sweep elections and fear of losing the rule as Ayub Khan had lost, compelled him to sign the charter of erasing student unions.
These unions will create law and order situation, was widely cashed pretext that led to their ban.
