Four Comedy Dramas and Sitcoms of PTV From 80s & 90s


Pakistan Television (PTV) has always been hailed for its drama production from its start in 1967 and it has produced some classical dramas like Nijaat, Deewarein, Dhool, Dhoop Kinary, Ankahi, Andhera Ujala and the list goes on.
 It is believed that Pakistani dramas are taught as reference in different drama schools of India. PTV remained the sole medium of entertainment in Pakistan till 2001, after which Pakistan saw a mushroom growth of News and entertainment private channels during the dictatorship of General Musharraf. During all these years PTV has also produced some quality comedy dramas and sitcoms. Here is list of four comedy dramas and sitcoms of PTV from 80s and 90s.


(1) Sona Chandi:  Sona Chandi is considered to be the classical comedy drama series of PTV, it was written by Munnu Bhai and was directed by Rashid Dar it went on-air in 1982 in Punjabi and Urdu languages and used to on-air from Lahore centre.
Sona and Chandi were husband and wife working in different houses and used to help people solve their domestic ways through their humorous performances. Sona was performed by Hamid Rana and Chandi was played by Sheeba Arshad.
According to Munna Bhai he wrote these characters after being inspired from real husband and wife named Sona and Chandi of Kallukot a tehsil in Punjab Province. The drama was well received by public and it was often quoted as reference while solving domestic problems.

(2) Khawaja & Son: Another PTV comedy hit drama series from 80s was Khawaja & son, this drama series was also very much popular among the people. It was written by Ata-ul-Haq Qasami and was directed Ayub Khawar. The main stories revolved around Khawaja Sahib and his son, the role of Khawaja Saheb was played by Ali Ejaz and Aurangzeb played role of his son.
 In this series a middle class family facing problems was shown, Ali Ejaz's comical role as Khawaja Sahib was a revelation. His dialogue delivery was  exceptional, especially when he suddenly switched to speak English broken and forced; his such style became  source of much amusement for the audience. The drama went on-air from Lahore center in 1985, and is still considered as one of the biggest hits of PTV.

(3) Teen Bata Teen: The young graduates from National Collage of Arts (NCA) Adeel Hashmi and Jawad Bashir went on to make a comedy series during 1997. It was written by Adeel Hashmi and was directed by Jawad Bashir.
 While the cast included Adeel Hashmi, Faisal Qureshi, Ali Tahir, Mira Hashmi, Wajiha Tahir, Fatima, Jawad Bashir and Salman Shahid. The drama dealt with the problems of youngesters and was well received among young people. Teen Bata Teen broke all records and won nominations in six categories at the 1998 Pakistan Television Awards. Adeel was nominated for his writing as well as his role in the play  which resonates with people even today.

 (4) Family Front: Another hit comedy drama from 90s was Family Front, it went on-air in 1997 and was written by Pakistan's one of most popular comedy writers Dr. Younis Butt and it was directed by Waseem Abbas and the cast included Saba Hameed, Samina Ahmed, Mira Hashmi and Naseem Vicky, it was more woman eccentric, the characters of Saba and Samina Ahmed were most liked and gained popularity among people.
