Sindhu Nawaz, Social Activists Demand Water For Badin
The activists of Youth Action Committee led by Jami Chandio, Dr. Akash Ansari, Sindhu Nawaz Ghangro and others took out a protest rally from SP Chowk to Hyderabad Press Club against the man-made shortage of water at Badin District and demanded to stop that theft of water and provide justice to people of Badin, and immediately remove slit levels.
In this regards the activists claimed that theft of water that was due share of Badin was an inhuman and intolerable act. The water crisis in Sindh was huge, but in Badin district the situation was worst, people were dying due to scarcity of water, while the corps in that district were also ruined.
They claimed that five canals were established which were used to take away water of Badin illegally, while the water was shared on the basis of favoritism in that district.
Famous poet Dr. Akash Ansari addressing the rally said: "our greatest enemy is our ruling class, especially those who are sitting in the assembly, they are our culprits and they are the ones who have stolen our water."
"I am unable to understand what kind of distribution is this, on one side our children are waiting for a drop of water, while on the other hand water is being wasted in the sea," Dr. Ansari added.
On that occasion slogans including: "give water to Sindh" and "give water to Badin" were also chanted.
Meanwhile an official of Sindh Irrigation Department sharing his opinion with "WiseSindh" claimed that those protesting were unaware of the actual problem and their information lacked facts.
He was of the opinion that slit levels are an important part of irrigation system, they are to be found at barrages, head regulators, fall structure and even at module, that was not present phenomena but has remained intact since British period, they are used to control the pace of water coming from up-stream to down-stream.
The official commented that shortfall of water was a genuine issue and its major reason was shortage of water in the river and slit level had nothing to do with this shortfall.
