Urdu Literature Created In Sindh Should Deepen Its Roots In Land Or Would Lose Importance: Rasool Memon

Renowned Sindhi novelist and short story writer Dr. Rasool Memon has said that the modern Urdu literature created in Sindh was at dead-end as it had no roots in the land, while successful Urdu literature in Pakistan was created in Punjab, in the service to Urdu language by Punjabi writers leaving behind their mother tongue, they were rewarded by Pakistan.

"Even Manto belonged to Punjab and he wrote Punjabi stories in Urdu, Manto's most popular story is 'Toba Tek Singh' because it is this Singh, who is present in most of his stories. The element of sex is not to be found in 'Toba Tek Singh', while the element of sex is prominently seen in all other stories of Manto.

Toba Tek Singh is just like  Maupassant's The Necklace, which lacks element of sex, otherwise Maupassant is Manto's teacher in portraying sex in his stories.

Urdu literature had deep roots in United Punjab,  Rajinder Singh Bedi, Ahmed Nadeem Qasimi, Ashfaque Ahmed, Amarta Pretam, Balwant Singh and others were able to create successful Urdu literature for having deep roots in land of Punjab.

The father of Urdu short story Prem Chand presented the sorrows and worries of deprived and oppressed people living in his surroundings. His characters belong to his native land/motherland.
Prem Chand laid foundations of progressive urdu literature in India, when India was going through worst economic period.

The Urdu literature being created from Sindh should deepen its roots in the land or it would lose its importance," Mr. Memon added.

Rasool Memon is a well-known Sindhi novelist and short story writer, he is a medical doctor by profession, he is one of those writers who use technique of surrealism in his stories and novels.

He has authored several books including Najoomi, Steel Ja Panjh Glass, Urweeh Aurtoon, Haleema, Kalobala and recently his novel Akh Chamb has come out. He lives in Karachi.
